AllMusic Review by Tim DiGravina:
Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner and violinist/pianist Jessica Billey make stunning, emotional music together on Pelican. Tackling even more haunted airs than those of most Dirty Three albums, Turner ratchets and delicately strums his guitar like a master painter here. Billey's violin weeps and wails and drifts off into the stratosphere. Together they create impressionistic instrumental music that seems lifted from some Western utopia. Fragile fragmented notes intertwine in the air, evaporate into a warm mist, and express animal emotions with ease. Country twang mingles with Velvet Underground dissonance and subtle melodies ring out and shift at will as the two musicians play off each other so expertly that they seem to share the same brain waves. The one-two punch of "Midnight Driver" and "Pelican" is a powerful wallop, and Turner's guitar is uncannily suggestive of Nick Drake on the latter. The third and perhaps most beautiful release in Bella Union's Series 7 project, Pelican is a singular work of genius.
