Review by Greg Prato
From Cornershop's impressive 1995 debut album Woman's Gotta Have It comes the CD single Wog. Containing three remixes of the track (by DJs Freaky Chakra and Witchman), the original version, and one non-album composition, the single appeals more to the hardcore fan, since for a few dollars more the newer fan can invest in one of their full-lengths. Opening up with a "Freaky's Edit" version, a repetitive rhythmic approach is taken, while the full-length "Freaky's Acid DJ Mix" melds psychedelic hip-hop beats with funky electronics. It also proves to be the single's longest track (close to eight minutes in length) and most interesting remix. The "Witchman Straight Mix" is a more percussive affair than the previous two, but the best version turns out to be the original. The non-album song, "Redhoused," is comparable to a slowed-down version of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," but still very enjoyable. An interesting, but hardly necessary purchase for fans.
