Review by Alex Henderson
In the late 1970s, it was often said that progressive and experimental rock were among the things punk was rebelling against. Rock, some punks argued, didn't need to be intricate and complex-emotion and feeling were the things that really mattered, and the best rock & roll was simple, straight-forward and uncomplicated. But truth be told, both approaches have their place in rock; simplicity can be meaningful and effective, and so can music that is more involved. Human Beans is a perfect example of the latter; the quirky, experimental space rock/alternative rock that Earthlings? provides on this CD isn't about simplicity and directness. Obsessed with science fiction, Earthlings? favors intriguing lyrics and refuses to go for directness or give listeners the quick fix. Even the band's interpretation of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" is bizarre and unorthodox. Human Beans, which must be accepted on its own terms, isn't easy to absorb the first time around-you have to play this album several times before you can fully absorb it. And the more times Human Beans plays, the more the listener realizes how much it has going for it.
