In 1997, FSOL embarked on a new album. Gaz Cobain had recently rediscovered his love of rock music, and the pair had started collecting second hand records to use as inspiration and samples for the new album. The album would be equal parts psychedelic rock and breakbeat electronica. A few early pieces were broadcast on ISDN transmissions. And then Gaz decided he wanted to shift the balance and create a full-on prog/psychedelic record, and the FSOL elements were gradually pushed out. Regardless of one's opinion of the resulting album, The Isness by The Amorphous Androgynous, an FSOL album created in such a manner would have been something unique, and I'm always disappointed it never came along. Life in Moments is probably the closest we'll ever get to that record.
Not that this is conceptually related. 'I Turn to Face the Sun' and 'Abandoned Housing Blocks of Prypiat' have their roots in 1997, but otherwise this isn't from those sessions. It is, however, the most Amorphous-era Cobain-heavy of all FSOL albums, with his fingerprints over a significant number of the tracks here. As with the previous year's Environment Five, Gaz spoke about the album with huge enthusiasm on Facebook, seemingly eager to set about recording the proper 'new FSOL album'. It never happened. Nevertheless, the results of this record are magnificent.
Some tracks are clearly Cobain works - quite possibly solo, in the case of the guitar-led 'A Somnambulant Drift', while others are classic FSOL electronics, such as 'I Turn to Face the Sun' and 'Grindatone'. In the middle, there are pieces that effortlessly blend the two approaches, such as 'Bring', 'Taken Leave of All Senses' and 'Triospheres'. And these are connected with atmospheric ambient and modern classical interludes, as per the Environments series. As with Environment Five, it's more focused on emotion than atmosphere, so those expecting the headtrip strangeness of albums like ISDN will find little here, but the album's blending of styles and approaches is masterly, and it feels every bit the FSOL album regardless.
As with 2008's Environments II, the remarkable thing with Life in Moments is how it was pieced together. As part of the continual move away from the traditional album/single routine, FSOLDigital releases around this period frequently featured bonus download-only EPs with purchases, and a number of the tracks here originate in those. Some are included in their original form, others like 'Bring' are radically updated, while a number of tracks are entirely new. Finally, in 2023, this long out of print album - originally just a bonus CD with a book - was expanded with four more tracks and given general release. These continue the blend of organic electronics and guitar & drums-style pieces, and remarkably feel at one with the rest of the eight year old album.
Life in Moments was to be the final album in this particular era of the band, with big changes just around the corner. In many ways it feels like the culmination of everything FSOLDigital had put out over the previous eight years, and is an unfairly overlooked highlight in FSOL's lengthy career.
