I've been waiting a solid 10,000 years or so for this to drop... and even 3 years since his last full project to reach streaming (see Mixtape, 2020), Bobbing's still got it! In fact, he's got it more than he ever has, and I have never be so not disappointed! Bob really leans in to the math-pop idea of this project, releasing full songs for the first time in a good while (see Thank You For Singing To Me, 2019) and executing every idea he attempts to communicate WITHOUT FLAW.
I've been a huge fan of Bob and his work with FMJ for a couple years now, so being able to see this album unfold before my eyes was magical, with a lot of callbacks in these songs, like Rag Time Girl sampling his old song Gas Boss for the beat, Let's Get Evil having the guitar solo I've been anticipating the most, and most importantly, his old demo Cool With It being completely redone and improved! On top of the leagues of enjoyment from songs like Elevator Music or Dog, this album is completely gapless, with Bob still showing how good he is when it comes to his astonishing song-to-song transitions being as seamless as ever! Every corner of this is jam-packed with fun beats, gnarly solos and amazing guest performances!!
Year of the Newt is TROVES of fun, not a moment I wasn't bobbing my head (Bobbing reference??), and it's only 27 minutes long! I wholly recommend that you give this a shot, it's currently my favorite album this year, and who knows? Maybe you'll agree with me.
