Reviews
AllMusic Review by AllMusic:

4 SATIN was originally issued as a three-track EP in the U.K. in 1997. By the time the U.S. version appeared in 1998, it had gone through a couple of major changes, reportedly because of a miscommunication between Mogwai's U.S. and U.K. labels. The American version has one extra track (alternately known as "Untitled" and "Guardians of Space") and a much earlier, rougher mix of the track "Stereodee"; additionally, the sleeve lists the tracks in the incorrect order.
Arguably, the best tracks are "Now You're Taken" and "Stereodee." The first is Mogwai's entry in the "slo-core" sweepstakes--a gently pulsing track replete with echoing rim-shots, mumbled but intelligible lyrics, and a glimmering guitar line. The second, "Stereodee," follows the band's pattern of a slow build culminating in a dense, sonic storm complete with massive washes of guitar feedback, but this time it mutates for 13 minutes, evolving into the kind of noise meditation that Lou Reed explored on METAL MACHINE MUSIC. 4 SATIN is the calling card of a band for whom punk rock and free-form jazz were always related, and for whom grunge was just another minor blip on the radar of a dead art form.
