Review by Bradley Torreano
Pearl Jam has always challenged the idea of what a mainstream rock band is capable of, and this single serves as another testing ground for their bizarre experiments. Here they pair the best ballad from the otherwise spotty Vitalogy with a cover of "Rearviewmirror" by the Frogs, a controversial folk band who has been known to play live in blackface and sing pro-homosexual anthems. Where "Rearviewmirror" was originally a moody rocker, it is transformed into a quiet folk ballad performed with tongue firmly in cheek. The different tones of the two songs do not quite match up, making for an interesting listen, but ultimately a failed experiment. Both songs are good, but they do not belong together on this single. Maybe if Pearl Jam would have lightened up and performed a Frogs number, this would have worked. But the world is a long way away from hearing Eddie Vedder sing "Savior Number Two," so this is only recommended for completists.
